SEMC appreciates your generous support of our annual activities!There are many ways to support SEMC through gifts toward general operations, the SEMC Endowment, the Handumy Jean Tahan Internship Fund, the Peter S. Lapaglia Scholarship Fund (supports JIMI tuition scholarships), Martha Battle Jackson Fund (JIMI), Leadership Institute, Legacy Society (Planned Giving), annual meeting scholarships and other activities.
The William T. and Sylvia F. Alderson Endowment Fellows
Professional members and friends of SEMC are encouraged to make commitments of distinction as Alderson Fellows. An investment of at least $1,000 is a significant leadership gift, reflective of a personal commitment to the professional commitment to the professional association that has meant so much to each of us. Funds from the SEMC Endowment benefit professional development activities of the association and ensure future growth of the profession.
The Handumy J. Tahan Internship Fund was established in 2022 with a substantial gift from donor, Joy Tahan Ruddell, in honor of her late mother, Handumy Jean Tahan, to support internships for museums in the Southeastern Museums Conference. The Fund will provide a museum or historic site a $1,000 stipend to support a paid internship. Eligible museums or sites will have a SEMC Category 1,2 or 3 operating budget that would not otherwise be able to compensate an intern. The Fund seeks to provide mutually beneficial opportunities that will nurture the next generation of museum professionals while providing essential staffing for the host and for emerging museum professionals, by offering paid internships that offer practical experience, collaboration with professional staff, and exposure to various aspects of general non-profit operations.
The Leadership Institute Fund
The SEMC Leadership Institute, a national program, launched in November 2020 as a professional development program of the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC). SEMC partnered with the Association of African American Museums (AAAM) to pilot this new Leadership Institute clearly focused on leadership training for staff of small- and mid-sized institutions. The Leadership Institute, which graduated the 2nd cohort in 2022, is the perfect opportunity for you to directly impact the future of museums and museum leaders. The Martha Battle Jackson Fund
The Jekyll Island Management Institute (JIMI) celebrated its 20th year as a successful SEMC program in January 2020. JIMI seeks to provide affordable administration and management training to museum professionals. Contribute to the continued development and growth of JIMI as we prepare to relaunch the program in January 2023.
The Peter S. LaPaglia Fund
Thanks to the generosity of friends and colleagues of the late Peter S. LaPaglia (co-founder of JIMI), the Southeastern Museums Conference (SEMC) and Jekyll Island Management Institute (JIMI) are pleased to offer a tuition scholarship. This endowment fund supports the annual Peter S. LaPaglia Scholarship to attend the JIMI program.
The SEMC Legacy Society
To recognize the generosity of individuals who have included the Southeastern Museums Conference in their wills or estate plans. SEMC has created the Legacy Society. Your planned gift will make a difference in the services of SEMC and the future development of our profession.
