Primary Purpose of Position: The Department of Natural and Cultural Resources is seeking an enthusiastic team member to be part of our wonderful organization! The Program Coordinator connects with public audiences in communities across North Carolina, cultivates partnerships within DNCR and with external stakeholders, and grows public awareness of the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission (NCAAHC) via digital content. This work will center North Carolina African American history, art, and culture, and will align with the organizational mission, vision, and strategic plan, as well as overarching departmental goals.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Supports NCAAHC’s statewide public engagement and partnership efforts, connecting with audiences across the state as the NCAAHC’s representative at a variety of public events, meetings, and speaking engagements.
- Connects statewide audiences to existing NCAAHC initiatives (including the N.C. Green Book Project, Africa to Carolina, and various heritage programs) through innovative, community-centered programs, experiences, and communications.
- Creates programs, resources, and experiences that are responsive to the needs of three core stakeholder groups (grassroots heritage practitioners, artists, and statewide and regional partners).
- Manages logistics for commissioner meetings, organizational programs, workshops, events, and community meetings alongside NCAAHC staff.
- Supports NCAAHC’s creation of social content, digital newsletters, web content, and other digital resources.
- Serves as a liaison and committee member for departmental divisions, initiatives, and programs, including, but not limited to, America 250th, the NC Music Office, and African American Cultural Celebration.
- Coordinating NCAAHC’s traveling exhibit program. This includes working with partner institutions, managing the booking schedule, and associated paperwork.
Position/Physical Requirements:
- Typical work schedule is Monday – Friday 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Some evenings and weekends as needed.
- Demonstrated ability to lift up to 20 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management Prefers:
- Demonstrated experience and/or expertise in history, art, African American studies, museum studies, public history, cultural studies, and/or education.
- Demonstrated experience utilizing digital tools and/or platforms (including but not limited to newsletter software, social media, website building tools and the Microsoft Office suite).
- Demonstrated experience working and communicating with the public in a professional setting.

Bachelor’s degree from appropriately accredited institution
AND
One year of experience related to the area of assignment
