The Artifact Preparator position is part of the Collections Management Section at the North Carolina Museum of History and reports to the Lead Artifact Preparator. The primary purpose of the Artifact Handling work unit is to safely handle and transport artifacts and fine arts, design and construct mounts and containers for storage, and transport and compile accurate data pertaining to artifacts in the form of artifact location information. This position requires a thorough knowledge of handling and packing practices, along with the requisite skills in coaching and communication with the various staff at all locations.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Safely oversee all aspects of handling and transporting artifacts and fine arts
- Be a skilled communicator and work closely with Registrars, Conservators and other staff when executing collection and exhibition-based projects, such as the installation of permanent collections and loan objects on exhibition
- Design and construct artifact housing for storage and transport
- Compile accurate data pertaining to artifacts in the form of artifact location information and donor and lender receipt forms
- Assist staff and outside researchers requiring access to the object collection
- Supervise interns and volunteers
- Act as a resource for the staff and be knowledgeable about packing and handling materials and their uses
Position/Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to begin boom, forklift, and scissor lift training once applicant starts in position
- Ability to work at heights up to 50 feet in a motorized personnel lift
- Ability to work on a ladder up to 18 feet
- Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license within 90 days of employment.
- This candidate must have the flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and occasionally make overnight trips.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified candidates must have or be able to:
- Demonstrated experience communicating with a variety of individuals.
- Demonstrated experience keeping accurate records or compiling data.
- Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office software- Outlook, Teams and Word (or comparable software).
Management Prefers:
- Knowledge or experience with museum exhibit installation materials and techniques, and/or fine arts packing.
- Demonstrated experience handling, installing, and/or mounting a variety of 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional artifacts and art objects.
- Experience in the safe operation and maintenance of a variety of hand tools and power tools, hydraulic lifts, forklift and/or scissor lifts.
- Strong interest in Collections Management.

Section/Unit Description:
The Collections Section of the North Carolina Museum of History is responsible for the intellectual and physical management of approximately 150,000 historical objects and fine arts. This stewardship includes negotiating with donors and lenders, issuing legal contracts transferring title of ownership from donors to the state, processing and cataloging incoming collections, maintaining up-to-date inventories, performing conservation and preventative measures as needed, creating proper storage and exhibit conditions, and packing and transporting objects for the Museum of History and its regional museums. Collections collaborates with all sections of the museum to create award winning exhibits and programs. The Collections range in size and materials from a bead to a building, from crystal to cast iron.
