    The Museum of Florida History, Florida’s official state history museum, is seeking a Museum Education Program Supervisor – SES (Working title, Curator of Education). The Curator of Education is responsible for developing and implementing educational programs as well as coordinating the statewide Florida History Day program.  As a member of the Museum leadership team, the Curator of Education reports to the director of the Museum and supervises employees within the Education section. The Curator of Education will have an exciting opportunity to help shape the Museum of Florida History for future generations as we embark on planning for new permanent exhibits.   

    Salary:  $50,000

    Minimum qualifications:

    ·         Bachelor’s degree in history, art history, humanities, public history, education, anthropology, museum studies, or related field OR four years of direct work experience in one of the listed fields.

    ·         Three years of full-time work experience in an education or teaching position in a museum, school, or other cultural or heritage organization

    ·         Knowledge of proven interpretive practices, techniques, and concepts

    ·         Demonstrated experience with planning and implementing education programs for general audiences

    ·         Strong writing, collaboration, and public speaking and engagement skills

    ·         Experience working with volunteers

    Preferences:

    ·         Master’s degree in history, public history, art history, museum studies, or in a humanities-related discipline

    ·         One year of supervisory experience

    ·         Experience working with timelines and budgets

    ·         Experience developing lesson plans for K-12 students

    ·         Experience working in a museum dedicated to United States history or Florida history 

    ·         National Association for Interpretation (NAI) certification

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • ·         This is professional work responsible for planning and development of Museum of Florida History programs to serve diverse statewide audiences and to promote learning and appreciation of Florida's history and culture. Works with Museum director and other section heads to achieve conceptual planning, development, and evaluation of all Museum activities, exhibitions, publications, and programs and to maintain operations of the state history museum to the highest professional standards established by the American Alliance of Museums.
    • ·         Serves as the sole coordinator of the statewide Florida History Day program.
    • ·         Supervises development, implementation, and scheduling of on-site and outreach programs, tours, special events, lectures, and workshops of the Museum of Florida History, Knott House Museum, and Union Bank Museum.
    • ·         Administers the Education section, including staff supervision, development, and performance evaluation, budget preparation, fiscal and property control, establishing completion deadlines, and ensuring that projects are carried out according to established criteria. Coordinates section activities with other section heads and the museum director.
    • ·         Participates in the Museum's Collections Committee and Exhibits Committee, advising in the acquisition and management of collections and exhibits planning. Supervises and conducts research of educational materials. Supervises administration of Knott House Museum maintenance calendar. Assists with applying for and managing grants to advance the mission of the Museum of Florida History and the Knott House Museum. Carries out special projects as assigned by the Museum director.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    ·         Ability to develop, implement, and evaluate educational and visitor service programs for local and statewide audiences of state history museums;

    ·         Knowledge of American history, obtained through coursework or on the job;

    ·         Knowledge of museum terminology and programs;

    ·         Knowledge of proven interpretive practices, techniques, and concepts;

    ·         Knowledge of museum exhibits planning and implementation;

    ·         Knowledge of strategic planning for museum education program development; Knowledge of grant and proposal research and writing;

    ·         Knowledge of preparing and maintaining budgets;

    ·         Ability to direct, supervise, and evaluate staff of the Education Section;

    ·         Ability to communicate effectively, in written and oral presentations;

    ·         Ability to market and promote museum education programs and events;

    ·         Ability to understand and apply pertinent rules, regulations, policies, and procedures;

    ·         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;

    ·         Ability to use a computer for word processing, research, preparation of plans, reports and presentations, and database management.
