    Job Description

    The Dr. M.T. Pope House Museum Director position is responsible for the overall direction and management of the Dr. M.T. Pope House Museum, one of the few African American house museums in North Carolina, which tells the story of the Pope family and the larger African American experience in Raleigh. The Pope House Museum Director develops interpretative and educational programs, trains and supervises staff, develops budgets, manages daily operations, coordinates short and long-term planning initiatives, and serves as liaison to other sections in the Historic Resources and Museums Program within the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.

    The Pope House Museum, 511 S Wilmington St, Raleigh, NC 27601.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Oversees revenue and expenditure accounts for Pope House Museum.
    • Provides administrative and management support for all facets of museum management that shall include, but not limited to program maintenance, staff supervision, administrative management, and facility operations.
    • Directly supervises facility staff and coordinates work schedules.
    • Reviews all programs, special events, and classes prior to implementation.
    • Oversees development and distribution of marketing materials within departmental guidelines.
    • Promotes programs, special events, and recruitment of staff through presentations to universities, local organizations, and civic groups.
    • Works with other Department and City program areas to develop and implement new and innovative Cultural programs for the public.
    • Supports public/private partnerships.
    • May assist the City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations.
    • Regularly scheduled forty (40) hours per week.  
    • Some weekend and evening work is required. 
    Supervisory Responsibilities 
    Directly supervises (4) four part-time staff as well as volunteers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.  

    Typical Qualifications

    Education and Experience
    Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation or directly related field and up to one year of related experience may be preferred.

    OR

    An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

    Licensing/Certifications

    • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree, Master's Degree or currently enrolled in degree program, in museum studies, history, public history, African American studies, or specific content area or field of expertise, or equivalent
    • Three (3) years of relevant experience. 
    • Competency in public administration, public speaking, and resource management concepts; knowledge of African American history in the US, and familiarity with Past Perfect, RecTrac, Microsoft systems software.

    ADA and Other Requirements:
    Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

    Medium Work:
    Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

    Working Conditions:
    Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.); frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood and other body fluids); frequent exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting and movement restrictions; and moderate exposure intense noise or travel.
