Primary Purpose of Position:
The Assistant Site Manager has various roles and responsibilities at the President James K. Polk State Historic Site. The person in this position must be able to establish and maintain effective work relationships, enjoy working outdoors and with the public, and should be able to manage multiple projects at the same time while collaborating with staff, vendors, and the community.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Acting as the Site Manager in the absence of the Site Manager
- Greeting and orienting visitors, operating the gift shop, and answering visitor inquiries
- Conducting guided tours and living history demonstrations
- Planning and implementing special events; serving as lead for all events.
- Planning and implementing on-site and off-site presentations and educational programs
- Developing and maintaining the intern program
- Scheduling and providing support for site rentals
- Conducting outreach and fundraising
- Assisting with maintaining site gardens and grounds
- Assisting with collections management
- Assisting with securing artifacts and facilities
Position/Physical Requirements:
- Valid NC driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment
- Must be able to perform light indoor and outdoor maintenance.
- Ability to lead tour groups in a variety of weather conditions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

- Demonstrated experience in various social media platforms as it relates to facility and/or program promotion.

- Demonstrated experience in preparing reports and maintaining records.
Management Prefers:

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of experience in giving or developing museum tours

Section/Unit Description:
The President James K. Polk State Historic Site preserves and interprets the life of the 11th President of the United States, James Knox Polk. The state historic site commemorates significant events in the Polk administration: the Mexican-American War, settlement of the Oregon boundary dispute, and the annexation of California. Reconstructions of typical homestead buildings including a log house, separate kitchen, and barn are authentically furnished. The visitor center features a film on Polk's life and exhibits on his family and tumultuous presidency. This site is located on land once owned by the parents of James K. Polk.
