    Summer 2024 Collections Management Internship, Waveland State Historic Site, Lexington, Kentucky               

    Pay: $15.00 per hour, 30 hours per week, Tuesday – Friday.

    Waveland State Historic Site in Lexington, Kentucky, is the site of a Greek Rival home and 10 acres maintained and operated by the Kentucky Department of Parks. Joseph Bryan, a grandnephew of Daniel Boone, built this house in 1847. The property includes the house and three original outbuildings: the slave quarters, smokehouse, and icehouse. Interpretation of Waveland State Historic Site focuses on the everyday lives of the family and the enslaved people who lived and worked at Waveland in the 1850s.

    The primary purpose of this position is to work alongside the Parks Museum Curator, Waveland State Historic Site Park Manager, and park curatorial staff in the documentation of the historic site’s 4,400-plus artifact collection. Waveland has a varied collection that includes everything from furniture and decorative arts to farm implements and cooking utensils.

    The intern will have the opportunity to travel with the State Parks Museum Curator to gain hands-on collections inventory experience at other Kentucky State Park museums in central Kentucky. This position will report to the State Parks Museum Curator.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Learn how to catalog a wide range of artifacts using the collections management system, CatalogIt
    • Learn how to write detailed catalog descriptions and condition reports.
    • Learn how to label artifacts with their object ID number using the appropriate artifact marking methods.
    • Perform data cleanup in CatalogIt.
    • Learn how to properly handle objects of varying types and materials.
    • Research and write social media posts about Waveland’s collection.
    • Assist with inventory checks at Waveland and other Kentucky State Park museums in central Kentucky.
    • Assist Waveland staff with special events and programs.
    • Complete a weekly meeting with their supervisor.

    Qualifications:

    • Majoring in History, Public History, Museum Studies, or a related field.
    • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate/graduate student at a college or university.
    • Availability to work Tuesday through Friday.
    • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office systems, especially Word and Excel.
    • Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills.
    • Must be detail-oriented.
    • An enthusiasm to work with museum collections.
