    Position:   Assistant Director

    Appointment Type: This is a full-time, exempt position with benefits for 40 hours per week. Benefits include retirement, vacation and sick leave.

    Pay Scale: The salary range for this position is $60,486.40- $102,825.06. Expected starting range for this position is 25% of the range, or $71,071.05  

    General Statement of Duties

    The Gaston County Museum of Art & History (GCM) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Director. This position is a key member of GCM’s executive leadership team, providing critical management of all aspects of museum operations and facilities. The successful candidate will evaluate, strategize, and supervise GCM’s curatorial, collections, and education and programming initiatives. With the Director, the Assistant Director will help set a vision for GCM’s interpretive and community engagement initiatives, manage the implementation of this vision, and ensure its alignment with GCM’s mission, vision, values, and goals. The Assistant Director is a key representative of GCM in the community and the broader museum field, helping to lead new approaches to museum work. Successful candidates will have a genuine interest in fostering long-lasting relationships that realize and strengthen the museum's service to, and value in the community.

      

    Illustrative Tasks

    • Manage all aspects of museum operations and facilities, including building upkeep and preservation of historic and non-historic properties. Oversee the appearance of public-facing spaces such as galleries and outdoor museum spaces.
    • Organize, manage, and implement the museum’s Interpretation Plan. Assist in broadening the organization’s perspective to be more inclusive of Gaston County’s history and communities.
    • Implement strategic vision and goals in all aspects of museum operations. Make key decisions, analyze metrics, and lead innovative strategies to help realize organizational goals through exhibitions, programs, education, and engagement.
    • Manage, evaluate, strategize, and supervise GCM’s curatorial, collections, and education and programming staff and initiatives.
    • Organize partnerships and collaborations with other non-profit organizations, businesses, and community groups in the region. Maintain a visible role in local events and organizations that align with the museum’s mission.
    • Oversee budgeting for curatorial, collections, and education departments and assist in organizing proper budgeting practices throughout the organization.
    • With the Director and development team, actively assist and engage in fundraising activities with individual donors, foundations, and corporations, as assigned.
    • Assist in organizing and leading museum committees through the Board of Trustees.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Director.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Qualified applicants must have a minimum of 5+ years professional experience in an art and/or history museum or cultural institution and at least 3+ years of experience in a supervisory role.  Four-year degree from an accredited institution in art, history, education, communications, or related field required. Masters degree preferred.

    Desired Training & Experience

    Candidates should maintain an understanding of art, history, and contemporary museum theory, peers and peer organizations, and current topics in critical cultural and social discourse.
    Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills are necessary for this role, as well as proven skills collaborating with diverse audiences, and a genuine interest in working collaboratively with creative professionals.  The ability to organize workload with minimal supervision and to effectively train and supervise staff is preferred. 

                 

    Special Requirements

    The ability to lift at least 25 pounds overhead and walk up stairs is required.
