    Museum of York County: Just 25 miles south of Charlotte, NC, the Museum of York County invites visitors to learn about the natural history of the Carolina Piedmont through exhibits, hands-on exploration and programming for all ages. Our hands-on Naturalist Center houses over 2,000 specimens. The Settlemyre Planetarium lets visitors travel the cosmos with state-of-the-art digital projection. The Museum’s newest exhibit, Ice Age Carolinas: Exploring Our Pleistocene Past, portrays the Carolinas’ prehistoric landscapes and wildlife during the Pleistocene Epoch from 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago. See, touch, and learn about fossils and the fossil sites in South Carolina that helped paleontologists piece together this fascinating story.


    We invite you to apply to join our team as a full-time (40 hours per week), exempt Education Program Manager at The Museum of York County. The primary purpose of this position is to design, develop, implement, and evaluate a full range of educational programs, while managing assigned staff.

    Work Schedule: 40 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday; some Sundays and evenings dependent upon event/program schedule.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Manages staff and volunteers who deliver educational programs by scheduling, observing program delivery, coaching, and providing feedback on a regular basis.
    • Manages daily on-site and virtual public programs, including planning interpretive activities and creating program schedules.
    • Develops and oversees programs that may include, but are not limited to summer camps, daily programming, summer programming, adult programming, special events, scout programs, and homeschool programs.
    • Develops and implements on-site and virtual school programs that meet SC and NC school curriculum standards.

    Other Duties:

    • Manages department budget.
    • Works cooperatively with other CHM departments.
    • Facilitates community partnerships to further the mission of the site and to share resources with other professional educators and interpreters in the county, state, region, and nation.
    • Recruits and manages paid performers, and contracted services for events.
    • Other duties as assigned.



    Education and Experience:
    Completion of a bachelor’s degree in education, biology or other related science field with either formal or informal teaching experience and three (3) years of experience.

    Prior experience working in an educational setting with families and children (such as summer camps, special events, scout programs, and homeschool programs) is preferred.

    Certifications and Licenses:

    • Must possess valid form of identification.
    • CIG certification required or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
    • Teaching certification is preferred.

    Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities/Attributes:

    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations.
    • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, visitors, and the public.
    • Skilled in Microsoft suite including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel.
    • Ability to understand budgeting and compile annual reports.
    • Ability to effectively deal with others inside and outside the organization.
    • Skilled in or fluency in Spanish a plus, but not required.


    Physical and Dexterity Requirements:

    Requires work involving: standing, sitting, and talking or hearing 1/3 to 2/3 of the time; gripping or feeling with hands, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, and kneeling, crouching, or crawling and talking or hearing under 1/3 of the time. Requires lifting up to 10 pounds 1/3 to 2/3 of the time and up to 50 pounds under 1/3 of the time.


    Vision Requirements:

    Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down or to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
