    KHS’s Head of Library and Archives manages the operations of the agency’s Martin F. Schmidt Research Library and Archives, which consists of more than 35,000 books and 4,000 cubic feet of archival materials, including manuscript collections, rare books, pamphlets, photographs, maps, oral histories, and more.

    This position oversees the building of important collections that support research into state and local history, providing specialized reference and family history services, and the preservation and digitization of library and archival collections. The Head of Library and Archives collaborates with colleagues and community partners to develop engaging programs and administer our award-winning Kentucky Ancestors suite of services.     The essential responsibilities include:

    • Lead a team of professional staff to operate KHS’s library and archives.
    • Proactively seek new collecting opportunities to enhance KHS’s library and archival collections.
    • Oversee the conceptualization, development, implementation, and evaluation of services and programs that address patron needs on subjects including genealogy, primary sources, and local history.
    • Lead the Kentucky Ancestors suite of programs, including Kentucky Ancestors Online, the Kentucky Ancestors television show, genealogy-related social media, and more.


    Education/Experience:  An experienced senior manager with demonstrated relevant experience in effectively leading a library or an archive. Minimum of five years’ experience in an archive or library and either a master’s degree in Library and Information Science or another related field.

    Specialized Knowledge:  Subject knowledge of and familiarity with the fields of history, genealogy, and related areas of study required.  Knowledge of Kentucky history is desired.

    This is a full-time position located in Frankfort, KY, that reports to the KHS Director of Research and Collections. This is an unclassified (non-merit) position pursuant to KRS 18A.115(1)(u). The annual salary for this position is $44,778.96 - $47,017.91.  The regular work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday with a 37.5-hour workweek, but the position will require occasional Monday, night, or holiday hours as needed.
