    Position Summary

    The Momentary is a new Center for Contemporary Visual and Performing Arts and Culinary Discovery in Bentonville, AR, slated to open in February 2020. The Center will operate as a satellite of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Reporting to the Head of Installation, the Assistant Preparator assists with all technical aspects of museum-quality art handling related to exhibitions, installations, artist in residence projects, and maintenance of art objects in the Momentary buildings and on the grounds, including: receiving, shipping, packing, framing, mounting, and storage. This position assists with the maintenance of exhibition spaces, shop areas, and storage areas.

    The ideal Assistant Preparator, The Momentary is hands-on, flexible, detailed-oriented, creative, and collaborative, with a passion for problem-solving and the ability to work safely in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication skills are essential as well as the ability to follow through and handle a high level of volume and complexity.

    Principal Responsibilities

    • Under the supervision of the Head of Installation, act as an assistant to the project leader for specific projects in design, mount making, and general woodworking needs.

    • Work with Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Exhibitions, Registration, and Operations to manage all aspects of special exhibition installations, artist projects and general needs throughout the Museum.

    • Assist with all loading and unloading of art trucks in a timely and efficient manner.

    • Assist with the unpacking and packing of artwork and exhibition furniture.

    • Assist registrars with condition reporting all incoming and outgoing artwork, objects, and artifacts.

    • Under the direction of the Head of Installation, assist with the design and fabricate safe housing for artwork, objects, and artifacts for storage and transportation purposes.

    • Ensure the safe movement and handling of art objects of all media.

    • Work with Exhibitions, and Visual Arts to implement and adjust gallery and museum grounds lighting.

    • Assist with the matting and framing of artwork for the purposes of storage and/or exhibition.

    • Assist in maintaining an inventory of tools, supplies, and materials.

    • Assist in maintaining organized, clean, and functional working spaces, including the Installation/Prep Studio, art storage, loading dock, woodshop, pedestal/crate storage, and across Momentary grounds.

    • Complete all additional assigned tasks and requests for the general support of the Visual Arts and Collections Management department and museum functions.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education, Training, and Traits

    • B.A. in an art related field.

    • Knowledge of art-handling procedures for two- and three-dimensional art object in a variety of materials, sizes and weights, including the rigging and moving of art.

    • Strong technical skills in basic construction, fabrication and installation methods; proper use and care of power and manual tools, lifts and other pertinent equipment.

    • Proficiency in the use of standard office equipment and software.

    • Skilled in handling all media of art, including digital, and familiar with installation techniques.

    • Working knowledge of hand tools and math applications.

    Work Experience

    • Minimum 1-2 years of museum or gallery experience

    In regard to education and experience, an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience will satisfy the minimum requirements.

    • Physical demands: In the work environment described below, position requires verbal and written conversation with others, sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, strenuous lifting/moving objects up to 50 pounds, and use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.     • Work Environment: The majority of work will be performed in an office, workshop, museum grounds or museum gallery environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate. Work requires periodic transport of packed art works and exhibition furniture and equipment to and from local offsite storage facilities. Position requires some independent overnight travel. Occasional evening and weekend work are required.

    The Momentary is a new contemporary art space that opened to the public on February 22, 2020, in downtown Bentonville, Arkansas. A satellite to Crystal Bridges, the Momentary presents visual, performing, and culinary arts. The mission of the Momentary is to champion contemporary arts role in everyday life and explore the unfolding story of contemporary American arts in an international context by actively commissioning and exhibiting outstanding works that explore new ideas and inspire action. The Momentary was founded by the Walton family, based on the vision of Tom, Olivia, and Steuart Walton.
