The Mitford Museum of Hudson, North Carolina, located in the newly restored Hudson Uptown Building (HUB) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Mitford Museum Director. Reporting to a Board of Trustees, the Director will participate in the final planning and installation of the collection as well as oversee all aspects of museum management. The Director will also supervise and develop the Museum Bookstore/Gift shop.
The Mitford Museum plans to open its doors to the public in June 2021. The Museum Director will have responsibility for curatorial and financial decision making in consultation with the Board of Trustees and have wide latitude in the development and implementation of museum educational programming both live and digital, fund raising, and retail operations. It is anticipated that the Museum Director will recruit and lead a cadre of volunteers.
The successful candidate will possess the personal qualities necessary to interact with and engage museum visitors, donors and potential donors, collaborators, educators and the Board, as well as leadership skills and familiarity with the intricacies of running an active museum. Experience in managing and promoting a Museum Bookstore is a priority. Prior knowledge of the literary works of Founder Jan Karon will be a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Individual must have substantial experience in the areas of financial development and management including grant writing, fundraising, budget preparation, and administration. Additionally, the Director must display the capacity to supervise, motivate, and work effectively with staff, Board of Trustees, members, vendors, volunteers, visitors, and the general public. The ideal candidate has experience as part of a visitor-centered museum and is dedicated to the development of self-supporting walk-in visitor experiences that create a level of comfort for all visitors.
Masters degree or equivalent in museum studies, history, public administration, or related field of study Experience in museum or historical site administration, exhibit design, community relations, and fundraising is required Excellent oral and written communication skills and comfort with technology is required Knowledge of regional and American history is desired.
Able to lift and carry up to 30 lbs as needed. Ability to handle and/or supervise daily housekeeping responsibilities.
Salary range: $48,000 and up, commensurate with qualifications. Benefits: Health insurance allowance.
