    The Exhibitions Designer is responsible for a range of tasks that support the Museum’s temporary and long-terms exhibitions program. The designer will work collaboratively with Museum staff and external lenders on the design and layout of various indoor and outdoor exhibitions. Project responsibilities may include floor plan creation, graphic production, budget tracking, exhibition preparation and installation. The Exhibitions Designer will also assist other Exhibitions staff with routine exhibition maintenance and repairs that ensure safety and a positive guest experience.

    Core Responsibilities

    This is a list of essential functions for this position and is not designed to be a comprehensive itemization of every activity, duty or responsibility that may be encountered. 

    • ·         Serve as lead designer for variety of indoor and outdoor exhibitions, including those presented in the Museum’s 8,000-10,000 sq ft gallery
    • ·         Work with Exhibition and Education staff members to create interpretive and environmental graphics
    • ·         Participate in exhibition development and planning with Museum staff as well external designers
    • ·         Create two- and three-dimensional computer-generated designs for various exhibitions and general Museum projects
    • ·         Serve as contact with suppliers, contractors and specialists working on exhibition projects
    • ·         Research and identify materials and supplies needed for graphic production and exhibition components
    • ·         Procure print estimates, process purchase orders and invoices, and track expenses for project budgets
    • ·         Produce space planning layouts for exhibitions in collaboration with Exhibitions Department staff as well as external lenders (as needed)
    • ·         Conduct research and acquire presentation rights for images and videos to be used in exhibitions or other displays
    • ·         Assist in the maintenance and repair of permanent and special exhibitions
    • ·         Other responsibilities as needed to support the Exhibitions Department and mission of the Museum

    Qualifications

    • ·         Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with emphasis in graphic design, architecture, industrial design or similar field
    • ·         Experience in 2D and 3D design field, preferably in museum profession.
    • ·         Mastery of 3D CAD software (preferably VectorWorks) and graphic design software (preferably Adobe Creative Suite).
    • ·         Ability to read, evaluate and create drawings for both graphics and exhibitions design production.
    • ·         Strong knowledge of materials, finishes and means and methods for both interior construction and graphic production.
    • ·         Ability to work independently and in a team environment
    • ·         Occasional evening and weekend work required

    Other Skills, Abilities and Competencies

    • ·         High level of enthusiasm and curiosity about natural history and science.
    • ·         Highly organized with close attention to detail.
    • ·         Ability to work on and complete multiple projects simultaneously, on time and within budget.
    • ·         Curious and motivated
    • ·         Experience working with power tools a plus
