    Summary:  The University of Alabama Museums is seeking a Communications Specialist to increase awareness of our museums and programs, and increase membership and visitation.  Emphasis will be placed on generating video and other interesting educational content for online platforms such as social media that sparks curiosity among audiences of all ages. This position also oversees the production of the Museum Chronicle magazine and other publications.  The Communications Specialist reports to the Executive Director of The University of Alabama Museums.

    This position supports communications and public relations efforts for the UA Museums system, which included the Alabama Museum of Natural History, Gorgas House Museum, Moundville Archaeological Park, Warner Transportation Museum, Discovering Alabama, Paul R. Jones Museum, Department of Museum Research and Collections, and the Office of Archaeological Research.

    Required Qualifications:  Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, or Advertising and one (1) year experience in journalism, public relations, marketing, or communications; OR Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, Marketing, or Advertising. Related student or Graduate Assistant, Intern, or student-oriented experience will be considered.     Skills required:  Strong oral and written communication skills, including writing and editing. Basic knowledge in the use of personal computers and standard application software (word processing, spreadsheet and/or database management programs, etc.).  Good organizational, interpersonal, and public relations skills. Upholds confidentiality during all assigned tasks. Detail oriented, work with minimum supervision, comfortable with learning UA software, flexibility to assist with other office activities.

    Preferred: An interest and/or experience in science and/or museum education or outreach. Knowledge and experience with videography preferred.
