The Columbus Museum seeks an Exhibition Preparator to assist with all aspects of exhibit preparation, construction, installation and dismantling as part of the museum’s design team.
The museum, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, has a collection of American art and a collection of regional historical artifacts and a garden designed by the Olmsted Brothers firm in the 1920s for homeowner and noted industrialist W. C. Bradley.
Duties and responsibilities include: working with the art and artifacts handler and registrar in installing and transporting artworks and historical objects, assisting with the exhibition coordinator/designer and graphic designer in producing and installing graphics; assisting the art and artifacts handler in lighting galleries, in matting and framing and in building mounts for art and historical objects, and painting exhibition areas. The ability to work as a member of a team is essential. The Exhibition Preparator works under the supervision of the Exhibition Coordinator/Designer.
Skills, education, and experience:
Skill in the use of Macintosh computers and programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and other applicable CAD software; skill in the operation of power and hand tools used in woodworking; skill in light welding and working with foam core, Plexiglas, fabrics, paints, and other finishes; good communication skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
Knowledge: Standards for exhibition fabrication and installation; safety requirements associated with such work; knowledge of American art and regional history objects a plus.
Education: bachelor’s degree in fine arts or closely related design field, job-related experience desirable. Associates degree with comparable experience and training may be substituted for bachelor’s degree.
