    Primary Purpose of Position:

    The Historical Interpreter II serves as the site education coordinator. They are responsible for booking field trips and school visits, creating, and implementing education programs, and distributing educational materials. They also conduct guided tours, interpretive programs, and demonstrations. This position is responsible for the site collections and must be able to carry out appropriate artifact management and care techniques. They must possess strong written and oral communication skills. This position assists with daily operations including greeting and orienting visitors, operating the gift shop, and assisting with site maintenance. This position also assists with site publicity, including creating and disseminating press releases, updating social media sites, and sending out brochures.

     

    Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Conduct tours and programs as part of visitor services.
    • Give on-site and off-site presentations and assisting with special events and programs.
    • Conduct appropriate artifact management and care techniques.
    • Conduct research into primary documents.
    • Operate gift shop and manage gift shop inventory.
    • Assist with light maintenance and janitorial duties.
    • Assist with site publicity and marketing.


    Position/Physical Requirements:

    • Must be able to work in variable weather conditions, ex: heat, wind, cold, etc. with or without reasonable accommodation.
    • Must be able to climb stairs on a regular basis with or without reasonable accommodation.
    • Must be available to work Tuesday - Saturday 8:30am - 5:00pm with occasional holidays, evenings, and weekends required.

    Management Prefers:

    • Demonstrated experience giving guided tours.
    • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing programs and events.
    • Demonstrated experience conducting research with primary documentation.
    • Demonstrated experience with artifact management and care.
    • Demonstrated experience with gift shop management.


    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

    High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma 

    AND

    three years of experience in giving or developing museum tours 

    OR

    an equivalent combination of education and experience.


    Section/Unit Description:

    The House in the Horseshoe was owned by Philip Alston, whose band of colonists was attacked here in 1781 during the American Revolution by British loyalists led by David Fanning. Later, four-term governor Benjamin Williams lived in the house, which now features collections from the Colonial and Revolutionary War eras. The House in the Horseshoe is now owned by the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, Historic Sites Division.

    Veteran’s and National Guard Preference

    Applicants seeking Veteran’s Preference must attach a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, along with the state application.

    Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.
