    Executive Director

    Key Responsibilities:

    In conjunction with the CEO 

          develop the strategic direction and establish initiatives to fulfill the Museum’s mission and increase local, statewide, and national awareness of South Carolina’s involvement in and impact on the Civil Rights Movement

          develop an action plan for relocating the Museum in the spring  of 202  to the historic Railroad

    Corner/State Theater site, presently under restoration, executing the action plan by managing all phases of the relocation.

          lead the organization by directing operations, to include staff oversight, development, finance; interpretive, educational, and public programming; and external communications.

          design successful fundraising strategies to ensure continued long-term financial health.

          lead community outreach efforts while expanding and maintaining partnerships and collaborations.

          serve as the Museum’s spokesperson and advocate.

    Required Qualifications:

          Master’s degree in a History, Education, Business, or related field. An advanced degree is preferred.

          Five years or more experience as museum director of non-profit history museum; preferable top decision make at civil rights or African American museum.

          A solid knowledge of South Carolina African American history, to include the struggle for civil rights from 1950-1970.

          Ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction with experience developing and implementing strategic plans.

          Ability to develop and interpret history from a timeline, involvement in initial museum and gallery development.

          Ability to set up and train staff to develop a comprehensive membership campaign.

          Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for museums or similar organizations, as well as a history of involvement in relevant professional organizations.

          Strong record of success in fundraising and audience development.

          Demonstrated excellence in writing and public speaking.

          Proven ability to work cooperatively, diplomatically, and effectively with Boards, staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies, and in community relations and outreach capacities.

          Competence in managing museum operations, including personnel matters.

          Demonstrated ability to supervise museum staff and volunteers.

          Evidence of success in developing, managing, and growing an annual operating budget.

          Excellent planning, time management, and decision-making skills.

          Working knowledge of spreadsheet, database, email, calendar/scheduling, and word processing software; working knowledge of social media strategy.

          Willingness to work a variable schedule, including weekends and evenings when needed.

    Salary Range $85,000 - $125,000
