    General Job Description

    The Horry County Museum is a general history museum that focus on the history, prehistory and natural history of Horry County, South Carolina. The Museum cares for a collection of artifacts and archival material and uses them in exhibits that tell stories for Horry’s past. The Museum also hosts family days, tours, and special programs.

    The L.W. Paul Living History Farm is a living history museum that focuses on the life of farm families in Horry County in the first half of the twentieth century with specific attention given to the 1930s and 1940s. This is done through demonstrations and interpretation of agriculture, domestic skills, and trades. The Farm hosts event days, monthly demonstrations, tours, and programs.

    Position Type: Full Time

    Hours: Tuesday-Saturday 8 am – 5 pm

    Starting Salary: $31,015

    Duties for this Position

    • Will assist Curator in research, design, fabrication and installation of exhibits
    • Will assist Curator with collections management
      • Responsible for paperwork associated with donations
      • Will process and catalog archives and artifacts into collections software in an accurate and timely manner
    • Cross trains in Museum and Farm interpretation as requested in order to maintain the museum and farm’s education and public programs.
    • Will work with Public Education Specialist to develop and implement public programming
      •  Assist in research and implementing lectures for active adult series and outreach programs
      •  Assist with creation and implementation of programs for grades K-12  
      • Conduct in-house and outreach programming for a variety of ages and audiences.
    • Will assist Farm staff with tasks and activities including, but not limited to:
      • Feeding livestock
      • Milking cows
      • Plowing mules
      • Handling hay bales
      • Operating mechanical farm equipment
      • Planting and cultivating crops by hand
    • Ensures all museum artifacts, farm equipment, and associated museum items are processed and handled in a responsible and safe manner in accordance with department procedures.
    • Will provide assistance to department management, co-workers and the general public as required.
      • Will assist other staff in programs, events, and projects. 
      • Under certain circumstances, will be required to assist museum and farm staff at various events or shows including onsite and offsite events.  
      • Will perform other duties as assigned.
    • Will work with Museum and Grants staff to develop, write and organize grant applications and packages.
    • Will meet all departmental employee standards, safety standards, and county standards.
    • All other duties assigned as part of the position.

    Position Minimum Requirements

    • Requires a bachelor’s degree in related field or discipline, i.e. History, Education, Anthropology, Biology, Geology, Museum Studies, and one to three years’ experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified or an equivalent combination of experience. Proficiency with Word, Publisher, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Acrobat, Outlook, Facebook, and Instagram required.
