Kentucky Historical Society Librarian
The Kentucky Historical Society (KHS) is seeking an engaging and collaborative colleague to work in one of Kentucky’s premier research libraries.
KHS’s Martin F. Schmidt Research library consists of more than 35,000 books and thousands of other serial, rare imprint, manuscript, graphic, and audiovisual materials. The KHS Librarian works to manage this important library collection, which is used by researchers across the nation and international scholars.
This position is critical for the day-to-day operations of the KHS library. The Librarian handles collections management, ensures the stewardship of the library collection, manages the library catalog software system (WMS), assists researchers, and oversees our Interlibrary Loan program. Through this work, the Librarian facilitates incredible research by ensuring our patrons have access to one of the top Kentucky history and genealogy collections in the nation.

This is a full-time position located in Frankfort, KY, that reports to the KHS Head of Libraries and Archives. This is an unclassified (non-merit) position pursuant to KRS 18A.115(1)(u). The annual salary for this position is $33,644.64 - $35,326.87. The regular work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday with a 37.5-hour workweek, but the position will require occasional Monday, night, or holiday hours as needed to fulfill the program and service needs of the mission of the Kentucky Historical Society. The essential responsibilities include:
· Provide technical services and collections management for the KHS library
· Ensure the stewardship of the library collection
· Assist researchers to navigate and access Kentucky history research materials
· Connect to libraries across the nation by overseeing Interlibrary Loan services
· Work with KHS colleagues to develop promotional materials, public programs, and tours focused on library collections
Education/Experience – Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent, one (1) year of experience working with reference services in a public setting.
Communication – Advanced writing skills including the ability to communicate with diverse groups of people in both formal and informal settings, and fluency in social media tools/communication strategies and other forms of content creation.
Computer Skills – Demonstrated proficiency in complex computer skills required, including Microsoft Office, and collection management systems (e.g. OCLC, Connexion, etc.).
