    The Curator of Rare Books is responsible for the ongoing preservation of existing collections and the acquisition of both recent publications and rare books. This position includes outreach to the diverse audiences of The Historic New Orleans Collection, professional, cultural and civic. Outreach includes public presentations and written outreach through both Collection publications and those of professional organizations. In addition, the position also participates in exhibition and Reading Room activities.

    The ideal candidate must have a M.L.S. or M.L.I.S. from an ALA-accredited program and a minimum of five years of related experience working with rare books in a special collections environment and in the development of library holdings. The successful candidate must have experience working with scholars, private collectors, dealers and auction houses, be able to identify holdings that are candidates for grants and possess an exceptional knowledge of New Orleans and Louisiana history as well as collections in other local and regional institutions. The Curator of Rare Books must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with The Collection's patrons, the general public, local agencies and community leaders and demonstrate excellent communication skills (verbal and written), including public speaking. Additionally, this position must be proficient in Microsoft Office and have the aptitude to learn and use museum specific software/databases, be able to work as part of a team and collaborate with others as well as work independently, and have the ability to be responsive to an evolving work environment. Prefer knowledge of French, German or Spanish languages.
