    The Head Preparator is part of a six member Curatorial team.  Working closely with the Curators and Registrars, the Head Preparator plays a key leadership role in managing all aspects of preparing for installation and de-installation of artwork in the Museum galleries, both temporary and permanent.  The Head Preparator also strategically plans for, and maintains, the Museum galleries and outdoor sculptures, both within the Hunter campus and off site.

     

    Key Responsibilities

    1.  Logistic planning to facilitate adherence to exhibition and art rotation schedules
    2.  Layout and visual design of temporary exhibitions and gallery changes in conjunction with Chief Curator and Associate Curator
    3.  Pack, unpack, and/or install art objects within the Museum, in the Sculpture Garden and occasionally off site; ensure proper handling and secure installation of art objects
    4.  Design and oversee production of exhibition props and signage
    5.  Frequent installation of Audio/Visual equipment in the galleries; oversee and manage exhibition lighting needs
    6.  Determine labor, equipment and material costs on projects; work within budget for preparatory supplies
    7.  Design and production of crates for art objects with input from Registrars
    8.  Carpentry and fabrication as needed
    9.  Framing and matting of artwork as needed; occasional repair and restoration of frames as needed
    10.  Photography of art and exhibitions
    11.  Coordinate outside contractors when needed
    12.  Evening or weekend manager as required
    13.  Assist with major Museum events such as Spectrum and Hunter Underground
    14.  Supervise Preparator, part-time employees, volunteers and outside contractors as needed
    15.  Other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including assisting other departments

     

    Qualifications

    ·         Bachelor's degree required

    ·         Museum experience (3-5 years),  1-2 years minimum in a leadership role supervising other preparators

    ·         Photography and Technical drawing

    ·         Excellent communication and teamwork skills; flexibility

    ·         Skilled in exhibition layout and three dimensional design

    ·         High skill levels with carpentry and all types of power tools

    ·         Detail oriented with exceptional organizational skills

    ·         Project management; ability to adapt to shifting deadlines and make effective decisions

    ·         Basic computer skills

    ·         Basic knowledge of Audio/Visual equipment, including digital projectors, media players, etc.

    ·         Ability to creatively problem solve construction and display issues

     

    Working Conditions

    ·         Exposure to vapors, fumes, dirt, noise, mechanical and electrical hazards associated with woodworking

    ·         Occasionally subject to adverse weather conditions when installing exhibits outdoors

    ·         Use of lifts, scaffolds and ladders

    ·         Frequent walking

    ·         Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs.
